Nestled in the heart of Norfolk, they’re serious about spirits. We went to visit their distillery, getting a real taste for the process – from barley to bottle.
No whisky was made in England after 1901. Until The English Distillery came along in 2006. It’s the oldest distillery in England, the first in over 100 years. True pioneering spirit.
The English Distillery still does things the old fashioned way, using the finest local ingredients. They draw pure water from the Breckland Aquifer, which sits just below their distillery. It’s a permeable, groundwater-storing rock and gives the whisky its unique sweet taste.
Not just spirits – they’re serious about the planet too. The English Distillery blend long-standing methods with modern technology to keep sustainability centre stage. The cooling water used in the distilling process is kept in a closed seal loop and returned to the ground after use. Relying on 94% less groundwater, it’s over 90% more efficient than traditional methods.
The Distillery feeds spent grains (draff) to local dairy herds and neighbouring farms use any excess liquids as fertiliser. Plus, they grow cricket bat willows. These nifty plants are great at capturing carbon and help to slow down any rain run-off, reducing the risk of flooding and giving local wildlife a place to call home.
