Sparkly, bright, bold with a bitter orange hit. Fizzing Italian herbs flirt with beautiful botanicals from Tarquin’s Cornish Gin. Ah, refreshing. Now – let’s take this to the table?
Often described as an Italian sunset in a glass, our spritz is the same but in a can (which can be put in a glass, of course). It came to be in Austria around 1900. Apparently soldiers from the Habsburg Empire loved softening strong Northern Italian wine with sparkling water. The verb for this action was to ‘spritzen’ and so the name ‘spritz’ came to be. The folks of Northern Italy must have got on board as by the 1950s, it was all the rage to enjoy these chic concoctions in the romantic region of Veneto.
Our spritz’s namesake. In Italian, it means pre-dinner aperitif drinks in a way that’s a bit of a ritual. You might have heard the phrase ‘aperitivo hour?’ A light cocktail. A few nibbles. A hearty debate? Just enough to whet your appetite.
