A SINISTER SHOWCASE
POLTERGEIST
Year → 1982
Director → Trobe Hooper
Scream Scale → 6/10
Synopsis: Centres around a young family who are visited by ghosts who at first appear friendly, but turn malevolent.
Why I like it: Simply for the quote “they’re here” and the very creepy, strange events that occurred during and after the filming of the movie to the cast and crew (google the Poltergeist curse).
THE HILLS HAVE EYES
Year → 2006
Director → Alexandre Aja
Scream Scale → 6/10
Synopsis: A suburban family targeted by a family of cannibal savages after becoming stranded in the Nevada desert.
Why I like it: Mutant cannibal zombies in a remote desert land, what more could you want? It’s tense, it’s stressful, it’s what I would call a really gripping watch from start to finish.
THE SHINING
Year → 1980
Director → Stanley Kubrick
Scream Scale → 7/10
Synopsis: Based on Stephen King’s famous novel, Jack (Nicholson) accepts a job as winter caretaker for an empty hotel where he can continue writing his book in peace. As his son begins experiencing strange sights and visions, Jack slowly descends into insanity and the question arises should you be more afraid of the living or the dead?
Why I like it: A true classic horror with every creepy element you’d want. I love that although it is a ghost story it doesn’t rely on cheap jump scares or special effects to scare you witless.
THE RING
Year → 2002
Director → Gore Verbinski
Scream Scale → 8/10
Synopsis: A journalist discovers a cursed videotape that causes its viewers to die seven days later. After viewing the tape herself the countdown is on whether she can solve the mystery using clues from the tape in time to save herself, her family.
Why I like it: Psychological and keeps you guessing, not what you expect from a classic horror movie, feels more like a murder mystery.
HEREDITARY
Year → 2018
Director → Ari Aster
Scream Scale → 8/10
Synopsis: Follows a family haunted by tragic and disturbing incidents
Why I like it: When you think you know where this film is going & who it’s about it does a fun 180 and takes you down the most unexpected path – more than once.
INSIDIOUS
Year → 2010
Director→ James Wan
Scream Scale: 9/10
Synopsis: When Josh & Renai’s young son falls into a coma mysteriously, he acts as a vessel for a variety of demonic entities.
Why I like it: Jump scare galore
